Citizens Receiving their Tree at SRP's Shade Tree Program

SRP’s Shade Tree Program Gives 3,000 Trees to Customers

Reflecting on SRP's Successful Shade Tree Program

As a dedicated advocate for sustainable living in Mesa, I'm pleased to reflect on the successful SRP Shade Tree program that took place this past fall. Over 3,000 desert-adapted shade trees were distributed to customers through three drive-thru pickup events in October and November.

In collaboration with Trees Matter, our volunteers and employees provided over 1,000 trees to more than 600 customers in November. Additionally, the October events in Phoenix and Mesa saw a remarkable turnout, with over 2,000 trees finding new homes.

Participants who had previously attended SRP's online workshop selected up to two tree saplings per household. The variety of trees offered, including Native Mesquite, Thornless Mesquite, Palo Verde, Willow Acacia, Desert Willow, and Lilac Chaste, are particularly suited to our desert environment.

When placed strategically around the home, the desert-adapted trees can help cut cooling costs during the hot summer months and require less water than other trees. SRP has distributed more than 57,000 trees through the popular Shade Tree program since it launched in 2012.

2024 Workshops and Registration

Before receiving their free shade trees, customers must attend a workshop where they learn how to care for and plant the trees. The online workshops are bilingual, and closed captions are offered. Looking ahead, registration for the next series of virtual workshops in 2024 is now open. These workshops are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, Jan. 25, 12-1 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 10, 10-11 a.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 24, 10-11 a.m.

Planting Guidelines & Safe Practices

To join, SRP residential electric customers must have the legal right to plant trees on their property and commit to planting and caring for them. Renters need verbal permission from landlords. It's advised to plant these trees about 15-20 feet from home walls and windows, ideally on the south, west, or east sides, for optimal shading.

Remember, before planting, it's essential to contact Arizona 811 to locate any underground lines. This free service ensures safe planting by marking the site's underground utilities.
