As a resident of Arizona and someone who deeply cares about our community, I want to alert everyone about the increasing number of utility scams, particularly during the fall. Scammers are targeting our neighbors, and it's vital we stay informed and vigilant.
How Scammers Operate
These con artists have become quite sophisticated, using digital methods like fake ads and impostor texts. They often create a sense of urgency by threatening service disconnection or demanding immediate payment, usually through prepaid cards.
SRP's Tips to Spot and Avoid Scams
Here’s what SRP wants you to know to stay safe:
- SRP won’t ask for payments through Zelle or Cash App. Official payments should be made through SRP’s recognized platforms or authorized retail locations.
- Unlike scammers, SRP never insists on a specific payment method. They give customers the choice and will never coerce you into using a fraudulent method.
- SRP does not pressure customers for immediate phone payments and always sends multiple disconnection notices by mail and email (if enrolled in SRP eNotes™).
Steps to Protect Yourself
- If someone claiming to be from SRP contacts you, hang up and call them directly at (602) 236-8888. Be aware of caller ID spoofing.
- SRP is always here to help, 24/7. If you encounter a suspicious call, email, text, or have fallen victim to a scam, don’t hesitate to contact them.
As a community, we need to be aware and protective of each other against these scams. SRP is doing its part, and we, as vigilant citizens, should do ours. Stay safe and informed!
